Active only for two years and with only one single released, GNARLSPUTRESCENT set itself apart from its contemporaries with their intelligent lyrics (from the mind and mouth of enigmatic frontman Necropile) and the aggressive, melodic fretwork of female bassist Sepulchura. While never as well-known or respected as the other groups that emerged from Helvete, the raw power of GNARLSPUTRESCENT and their sole release ANCESTRAL PAIN must be recognized and chronicled in the annals of Black Metal.

GNARLSPUTRESCENT were signed to the Norwegian label Clan Reckoning

GNARLSPUTRESCENT disbanded in 1992 after drummer Dødsjel's incarceration. GNARLSPUTRESCENT attempted to recruit a replacement before deciding to dissolve their union.
